Words for Change

Narrow Path, Steep Way

This time is full of all sorts of things
but I can’t see many good ones
my eyes are looking hard
I can’t help it
I know what I know
but I don’t want to know
what I know
I can see the direction we’re headed
along a wide road
an inevitable looking one
full of cars and malls
Disneyland and TV
paved as far as I can see
maybe to the moon, Mars and beyond
and everyone wants the same thing
to be happy and rich enough
not to suffer loss, a good life
free of the blues
as much as you can be
and its almost like
there is no exit
except when you remember
you’ve got feet
and even though it’s one way
you can walk over
to the shoulder
leave the pavement
and its noise behind
learn to walk along
a new way
older than flesh and wood
as old as wind and water
narrow as the seed’s sprout
steep as the dawn’s breath
